DiscardLess stakeholders meeting in Bilbao - 30th of November, 2017

A new successful and productive DiscardLess Workshop-day took place in Bilbao during the 30th of November, 2017, hosted by AZTI who leads the Bay of Biscay Case Study and the Work Package 6 of the project.  This time the workshop focused on the involvement of different NGOs interested in the case study: Oceana (Javier López - Policy & Advocacy Manager), WWF (Raúl García- Fisheries officer), Seas at Risk (Björn Stockhausen - Fisheries policy officer), SEO-BirdLife (Pep Arcos- Coordinator of Marine Programme) and Ecologistas en Acción (Eneko Aierbe – Fisheries Officer). The multidisciplinary team that conforms this CS showed them the results obtained in these first two years of the project.

The day started with a general presentation of the DiscardLess project, enhancing the need for an effective stakeholders’ involvement in the entire project lifetime (actually, some of the invited NGO representatives participated in the first stakeholders meeting hold during the kick-off meeting of the project in Bilbao). The work developed in the different Work Packages of the project was presented afterwards, showing the potential effects that the implementation of the Landing Obligation might have both on the marine ecosystem, making special emphasis on seabirds, and on the mixed fishery operating in the area. The different gear adaptations that have been analyzed for this fishery were also shown, followed by an evaluation of the possibilities to process the unavoidable unwanted catches once they are on board or landed. The lunch was followed by a round-table with different questions related to the implementation of the LO, the role of the DiscardLess project and the different NGOs’ views were discussed.
