Meeting in Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands) - Western Mediterranean Case Study

The DISCARDLESS team from the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean Case Study) organized, together with the General Directorate of Fisheries and the Fishermen Association of the Balearic Islands, a technical Seminar on the bottom trawling fishery. The main objective was to inform the fishing sector about different technical measures and strategies that could be used to reduce the impact of this fishery, including discards.

With a total of 45 attendees, including fishermen, net makers, fishing technicians from SIMRAD, researchers, fishermen associations representatives and fisheries managers, the fishing sector responded positively to this day, in which more than half of the bottom trawl fleet of the Balearic Islands was represented.

The day began with seven short presentations, all of them followed by questions from the audience. These presentations dealt with the situation of the trawl fishery in the Balearic Islands and possible technical measures to improve the ecological and economic efficiency of this fishery by means of using less impacting gears, reducing the fuel consumption and adopting new commercialization strategies.

The Seminar was closed with a debate in which all the attendees participated. It focused mainly on the feasibility of implementing some of the technical measures that had been presented and possible funding sources to carry them out.
